Cambridge University suggests that inherited mutation in some genes make people far more likely to develop Alzheimer's and Parkinsons. They have recently discovered that sometimes genes can go haywire even without the mutated genes inherited from parents. In Britain, Professor Patrick Chimney writes that one in 20 patients develop genetic variants inherited from their parents, but it is unknown why other people, not at risk, get Dementias. As DNA is unraveled, we will know more of why these mutations exist. If you, as the Administrator or other staff member, feel it would be helpful for family members and your Activity Director to have new ideas for ways to stay connected to Memory Care residents, see Medical Update's website and the course: Lifelines for Alzheimer's, Keeping Love Alive. Some very unique "connecting" activities and suggestions pertaining to how the brain still retains emotional memories are taught. www.MedicalUpdate.com.

A big help to Long Term Care facilities is they are now allowed time to correct a citation, delivered by the federal survey team, without being doubly penalized. Prior to Trump's change in the law, the homes could be fined for a period of time before the citation was even issued. Nursing Home Administrators, Assisted Living Managers and Memory Care Managers are congratulating the leaders of the industry for pushing this new ruling through. Watch for continuing education and classes on the subject and new regulations.
Long Term Care homes will watch to see if the Amazon, Berkshire, and JP Morgan plan to cut costs and improve care will affect care of the frail elderly who need intensive care outside of their home. This was not reveled in the initial article today.
