Administrators,
How do you think nursing homes will benefit from hospitals deciding to shift away from their traditional inpatient facilities? One of Medical Update's courses speaks to the changes in care for the aging, Realities of Aging, a 15 CEU course. As does this article in the Wall Street Journal.
The Future of Hospitals in the Wall Street Journal says:
"Here's a look at some of the changes coming to the traditional hospital.
Studies by Jeff Leff and others show hospital level care at home for certain conditions can be provided for 30%-50% less than inpatients care with fewer complications, loser mortality rates and high patient satisfaction. The clinical director of Mount Sinai at Home says "For some admissions, we can avoid the emergency department. but for most like pneumonia or dehydration or a skin infection, we evaluate them in the Emergency Department and then send them home in an ambulance with an IV in place. This Half Plus program provides 30 days of care, including referring patients back to primary care doctors and connecting them to services they need to avoid admission."
Can you see that this is where nursing home and assisted living facilities come in? If a patient does not have family at home to support the Half Plus Care programs they may be admitted to a facility which can give more care once the crises period of the illness is over.
Medical Update will continue to monitor these changes. As trends develop look for CEU courses for Nursing Home administrators on this subject.
